Dental Implants: A Modern Option for Denture Patients

Why should I consider implants to support my dentures?

You may have wondered about the advances made in dental technology over the last 30 years. A new procedure based on extensive osseointegration research has greatly increased comfort and stability for denture wearers today. In the past, tooth replacement options were limited, and patients with full dentures are now experiencing soft tissue and bone loss. Because titanium implants fuse naturally to your jawbone, a greater level of support is achieved. Dental implants allow for:

  • Improved form, function, and speech, so you can comfortably smile, chew, and speak.
  • A reduction in upper and lower bone recession, which prevents facial shape change and continual dental adjustment.
  • Permanent dental support that doesn’t require continual a djustment or quick-fix remedies.

How do I find a dental implant surgeon?

Dr. Margolin specializes in the field of periodontics and dental implants. His expertise lies in aesthetic dental surgery, and he has given numerous seminars on the topic. In addition, doctors Lorin Berland, Sarah Kong, and Diana O’Quinn have advanced training in the newest dental procedures and technology and are experts in engineering dentures that best fit the contours of your face and jaw. At your first consultation, our staff will evaluate your oral condition to determine if you are a candidate for dental implants.

Some questions to consider during your consultation:

  • Can I look at before-and-after pictures of previous patients?
Dr. Berland’s extensive Library of Smile Style Designs will help you to choose what style of denture works best for your daily routine.
  • How many implants will I need?
The minimum number is usually two per upper or lower denture, but often more are placed to increase stability. We will determine the number based on your specific needs.
  • When can I begin the implant procedure?
New dentures must be created before you can begin the implant procedure. This is important because:
    • It allows time for healing and conditioning of your gums.
    • It establishes the aesthetics of your teeth and gums including shape, length, and color.
    • Your whole face must be evaluated to determine proper lip, chin, and cheek support.
  • Will the procedure be painful?
Dr. Bernard and the clinical team offer the latest in sedation technology to ensure your comfort. The implant procedure is considerably less painful than tooth extractions, and postoperative discomfort can generally be treated with ibuprofen.
  • How long is the healing process, and when can I wear my new dentures?
The time that you will have to go without your dentures ranges from one day to two weeks, so it is a good idea to take time off work. It generally takes three to four months for bone to fuse with a titanium implant, developing a strong support base that can last a lifetime. In some cases, implant-supported dentures can be worn immediately, and patients are able to eat, speak, and smile with confidence as soon as they leave our office. Healing varies from patient to patient and is largely dependent on personal habits and oral hygiene.
  • "Titanium Root Form" dental implants form a permanent bond with your bone called Osseointegration. With proper care and maintenance dental implants can last a lifetime.

How do I maintain my dental implants?
In addition to cleaning your dentures regularly, you will need to brush the implants and visit us for professional cleanings. Proper maintenance contributes to the longevity and comfort of your implant.
  • What other options besides dentures do I have with dental implants?
Usually, the classic denture over two implants is the least expensive and least complicated. As we add more implants, the treatment becomes a bit more complicated, expensive, and time consuming. For an extreme example, if you had adequate bone throughout your mouth, you could have an implant placed for every missing tooth. This could add up to over 20 or more implants and the attached dental work. Our best advice to you is to talk with Dr. Margolin and let him give you all of the options and prices, and then you can make the decision that best suits your needs and budget.
